Valencia defeated Valladolid in a thrilling match on Sunday evening, with the visitors coming away with a 2-1 victory thanks to a late Cavani goal.
The game was a closely contested affair throughout, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the back of the net until the final stages. However, it was Valencia who finally broke the deadlock in the 86th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a handball by Valladolid defender Sergio Rico.
Cavani stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent Rico sprawling to his right, leaving the goalkeeper stranded as he powered home the penalty to give his side the lead.
Valladolid responded immediately, however, as they equalized just three minutes later through a stunning strike from the edge of the box. The ball flew past the Valencia defence and into the bottom corner of the net, sending the home fans into raptures.
Despite being reduced to ten men after defender Federico Valverde was sent off for a second bookable offence, Valencia refused to give up and continued to press forward. And their efforts paid off in the 95th minute, when they were awarded another penalty after Valladolid's Yannick Bolasie handled the ball in the area.
This time, Cavani slotted the ball calmly into the top corner of the net to secure the victory for Valencia and send them into the Europa League group stage next season.
The win was a much-needed boost for Valencia, who had struggled for form in recent weeks. It also marked a significant moment for Cavani, who has been linked with a move away from Manchester United this summer. His impressive performance against Valladolid could be a sign that he is ready to make a big impact at Old Trafford next season.
